I'm now a balaclava fan.

I like that it's thin enough I can wear it, then a beanie style toque, then my hard hat still fits on top. I also used a fleece neck warmer tube which also went over it nicely due to it not being bulky. Used this combination at -23 celsius with success. Any colder or strong winds you'll want something heavier. I also have a Helly Hansen undershirt in the same merino wool/poly combination which is warm and comfortable. Very nice material.
